Easter Carrot Napkins

Check out this cute Easter place setting that a friend showed me! How adorable would these carrots be on the dinner table this Easter?

This will be an easy and no mess craft for Easter. Think about how proud the kids will be to show them off to the relatives.

You will need...
  • Orange Paper Napkins
  • Green Pipe Cleaners
  • Green Plastic Utencils
Instructions...
  1. Open up the napkin and refold it into a rectangle
  2. Take the bottom right corner and fold it up to meet the top of the napkin. It should end up left of center.
  3. Place the plastic utensils just inside of the point created at the bottom where the fold was made. The utensils should lay diagonally so the tops stick out at the top left point.
  4. Fold the left of the napkin over the utensils and continue rolling up the napkin to form the carrot.
  5. Wrap pipe cleaners around the top of the carrot to secure the napkin leaving the ends to stick up like leaves.
Depending on the size of your napkins you may have to change the angle of the utensils when you wrap them.

Paper Mache Easter Egg

Do you remember doing these at school when you were a kid? This would be a great craft to make with your kids this Easter.

Kids love getting messy and making things. Paper Mache falls right into there. My kids love doing paper mache crafts. They have fun sitting around the table together and we have great conversations.

Paper Mache is also a cheap craft that also recycles old newspaper. All you need is old newspapers cut into strips and the paste. To make paper mache paste simply mix flour with twice as much water.

To make this project you cover a balloon in at least 4 layers of paper mache. When the paper has fully dried (a day or two) cut a circle to form a window like opening in the egg. You can then decorate the inside and outside of the egg.

If you do not want to paint the egg you can use colored tissue paper on the first and last layer. Then you will already have a pretty colored inside and outside. Most people fill the egg with Easter grass and add plastic eggs and chicks. You can decorate yours any way you want. You could also leave the egg whole and paint them like pretty Easter eggs.

Collapse of Distinction

Collapse of Distinction talks about how to stand out in a world of cookie cutter businesses. With the economy getting worse everyday, businesses need to be different to stay alive.

Look at what companies are closing down. Best Buy seems to be doing fine yet Circuit City is going out of business. We are in a world full of businesses that just copy each other. There is no longer enough business to go around so you want to stand out and keep your business.

This book brings up some great topics. Why would you want to be just like every one else? When customers do not see a difference in your business they also see no reason to just go to you.

I found this book to be a great resource. It is full of thought provoking topics and ideas. I would definitely recommend it.

I must also bring up the extras that come with the book...

This is the first "Nelson Free" book I have received from the Thomas Nelson publishing company. Nelson Free gives you a free audio version and a free ebook version when you purchase the book. You just go online and download the book you purchased. Talk about standing out and changing to meet demands. In a digital age this is a great move.

The book itself has an extra too. When you purchase the book you can log onto a website that goes along with the book. The website has more business information and you can share your story.

Strawberry Lemon and Lime Ice

What could be better on a nice warm day than an Italian Ice? This is our newest flavor we created.

Our family really loves making our own Italian Ice. We usually make it when we have some kind of fruit that we need to use up. This time it was a bag of frozen strawberries. We had the bag in the freezer for a while and just never felt like using it.

I asked the girls what they would like to make with the strawberries and they immediately wanted Italian Ice.

While we were at the store we went to get the lemons and we saw some limes on sale. So that is how this flavor was thought up.

We have a large family so this recipe makes a lot! You can make a half recipe if you do not want a lot.

Ingredients
  • 7 cups water
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • strawberries - 1 container fresh or frozen
  • 3/4 cup juice of lemons
  • 3/4 cup juice of limes

Directions
  1. Mix the water and sugar in a pot and simmer.
  2. Add the strawberries and continue to simmer.
  3. When the strawberries have become soft use a potato masher to break them up and mix them in the liquid.
  4. Add the lemon and lime juice and boil for 2 minutes.
  5. Remove the pot from the burner and let cool.
  6. Pour the liquid into containers and freeze.
This is a simple and very tasty treat on a nice warm day.

Kindle 2 Extras

I am sure you have seen a lot about the Kindle 2 lately. I am sure you have not seen it all though. Here are some little known extras.

The Kindle 2 is the well known new wireless reading device available from Amazon. Most people know that you can quickly buy and download books on to it with no need for a computer. People do not however know about everything else it can do.

Did you know that you are not just limited to the over 245,000 books? You can also subscribe to magazines, newspapers, and even blogs. The Kindle 2 holds 1,500 books but if you run out of room all of the books you have bought are still on file with Amazon so you can download them again for free any time. Yeah, I am sure some of you had heard about that.

Did you know that you can connect the Kindle 2 to your computer and put your MP3s on it? This allows you to enjoy your music while you read. If you do not want to listen to music you could use the Read-to-Me feature and the Kindle 2 will read it for you.

So why does the Kindle 2 have a keyboard? You are able to make notes on the pages and save them just like you could in a paper version. You can also highlight key parts to go back to later.

Ever get stuck on a word or a subject in a book? The Kindle 2 has a dictionary just waiting for you. It also allows you to search online and in Wikipedia. Now you can continue to relax with your book with no need to go to a computer.

The Kindle 2 also includes a few more interesting extras. You are able to get a chapter or two free if you are undecided about a book. You can connect it to an iPhone and do some of your reading from your phone. It also has a basic web browser. Remember, it comes with free wireless.

The Kindle 2 has one more little known extra. Business people may find this very interesting. For a fee of 10 cents a document you can receive Microsoft Word, PDF, HTML, TXT, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, PRC and MOBI files. You just need to set up the Kindle's email address.

To add documents to the Kindle 2 for free you need to use a computer. You send files to a free Kindle email address. There the files will be converted for the Kindle and you can save them to your computer. Then the files can be added to your Kindle 2.

All in all it is much more than a wireless reading device. I am really excited to see what devices will come out next.

Irish Soda Bread

So what will you make with your Guinness Irish Stew? Well, Irish Soda Bread of course! This bread takes a long time to bake but it is simple to make. It also tastes great with the stew.

Ingredients

3 1/4 cups unbleached flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1 1/2 cups buttermilk
(substitute - add 1 tablespoon of vinegar to white milk)

* Add in Ideas

Herbs - 2 tablespoons freshly chopped herbs, such
as rosemary, sage, thyme, chives, and parsley

Directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.
* The temperature changes half way through the baking so be
sure to read all the way to the end of the recipe.

Mix all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl, make a
well in the center and pour all of the buttermilk in at once.
Using 1 hand, stir in a full circle starting in the center of the
bowl working towards the outside of the bowl until all the
flour is incorporated. If it is too wet add more flour. The
dough should be soft but not too wet and sticky.

When it all comes together, a matter of seconds, turn it out
onto a well-floured board. WASH AND DRY YOUR HANDS. Roll
dough around gently with floured hands for a second, just
enough to tidy it up, flip the dough over. Pat the dough into a
round about 1 1/2-inches deep.

Sprinkle a little flour onto the center of a baking sheet and
place the loaf on top of the flour. Cut a deep cross on it with a
sharp knife, prick the four sections to let the fairies out. Pull
the cuts open more so the bread opens up some to make sure
of this.

Bake for 20 minutes, then reduce the heat to 400 degrees
for 20 minutes, or until just cooked. If you are in doubt, tap
the bread. If it is cooked it will sound hollow. Cut into wedges.

Rainbow Science

When we think of the luck of the Irish and St Patrick's Day rainbows always come to mind. Here is a neat rainbow science experiment.

YOU WILL NEED

Wide-mouthed, smooth, circular glass jar or
large plain drinking glass filled with water
Small mirror
Flashlight

HERE'S HOW

1. Place the mirror inside the water-filled jar. Tilt the
mirror slightly upward.

2. In a very dark room with white walls, shine the
flashlight onto the mirror. A rainbow appears! (Hint: If
no rainbow appears at first, just change the angle of
light from the flashlight or change the angle of the
mirror.)

WHY?

The mirror reflects light that passes back through the
water, traveling at an angle. The water refracts, or
bends, the light. As light bends, it separates into the
colors of the rainbow—red, orange, yellow, green, blue,
and violet.

Blarney Stone Craft

St Patrick's Day is coming fast. You can tell the story of the Blarney Stone and make a cute craft too.

So what is this craft? Well, it is up to you. A rock is a blank canvas. You just need to find a nice smooth rock and clean it.

Ideas...

Blarney Stone - Paint the rock green or leave it plain. Write on the rock with permanent marker. You could write... Blarney Stone, Kiss Me I'm Irish, or Luck o' The Irish.

Pet Rock - Remember those old pet rocks from years ago? Children today have no idea anything about them. They would have a lot of fun making one or two or even a lot.

Painted Rocks - Spring is coming but it is still not very colorful outside yet. You could paint flowers of pretty designs on rocks and then set them outside to brighten up the yard.

Blarney Castle is a popular tourist attraction in Ireland. Visitors must climb way up to the top of the castle to reach the stone. Then visitors must be held steady while they lay on their backs and arch backwards off a ledge. All of this to kiss the Blarney Stone.

The Blarney Stone is said to have magical powers. The old Irish legend says it gives people the gift of gab. Irish people love to tell stories so this is a true gift. Many visitors believe it will also help them find and keep true love.

Free File Storage

I got an email from Yahoo the other day. It was to inform me that Yahoo Briefcase was shutting down at the end of March. I am fine with that because I found something much better. Google Docs is great and free.

I spent years using Yahoo Briefcase. It did what I needed it for but it was just a simple file storage system.

What I needed was something to upload work files to so I could easily access anything from any computer at a minutes notice. It is also nice to have back ups to your files.

I stored all of my spreadsheets, sales fliers, image files that I used in fliers, and even resumes. You never know when you may meet someone and wish you had a resume to hand to them. So yes I even keep some in a folder in my Jeep at all times.

Google Docs takes over where Yahoo Briefcase left off and then some. Actually I fell instantly in love. It does so much more than what Yahoo ever did.

Google Docs does not just store your files it also allows you to make files right online. There is no need for your own office software if you do not have any.

Google Docs even goes one further. They have hundreds of ready made templates. everything from work schedules to printable address labels. They even have resume templates. That will come in very handy for the thousands of people that are looking for jobs right now.

The icing on the cake is that you can share access to your files if you want to. You can also assign people as collaborators and they will be able to add to and edit the files. Pretty darn cool huh? It is all free too!

I am all for geeky things and of course free things too.
