German Pfeffernuesse Cookies

German Pfeffernuesse Cookies are a lot like Russian Tea Cakes but they have a very unique taste. These cookies have added spices and a hint of licorice flavor from the ground anise. This is the second year that we are making them ourselves. From what I have seen the name of the cookie means "pepper nuts".

Every year we would buy them at the store during the holidays. It seemed kind of silly when I thought about it. We make so many cookies and treats over the holidays we might as well make these too. We had soooo many people asking for our recipe so we knew that we had to make them again and share the recipe. Here is our recipe...

Ingredients

2/3 cup softened butter
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1/3 cup molasses
1/3 cup water
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon anise seed
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/8 teaspoon cardamom
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 cup chopped nuts
1 cup powdered sugar

Directions

In large bowl, combine butter and brown sugar, beat till light and fluffy. Stir in molasses and water. Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup and level off. Add flour and all remaining ingredients except for nuts and powdered sugar. Blend well. Stir in nuts. Cover with plastic wrap, refrigerate 2 hours for easier handling.

Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Shape dough into 1 inch balls. Place 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 9 to 12 minutes or until bottoms are golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheets. Roll in powdered sugar. Roll again after cooled.

This recipe for Pfeffernuesse Cookies makes 5 dozen cookies.

  1. I have had these cookies before and I actually really like them..I say "actually" because I typically do not like the anise flavor..but these ones, I like!

These sound like one of the cookies my aunt used to make every year. She did a lot of the old fashioned traditional cookies. Boy I miss those. thanks for sharing the recipe
