How to Make Friendship Bracelets

I am a proud Mommy yet again. All of my websites started because my kids came home from school telling me that almost all of their friends had no idea how to make friendship bracelets. My girls LOVE making them. It is one of those relaxing things you can do while going on a long drive, sitting on a flight, or just sitting in the house bored watching television.

Kids have so much more stress these days than we ever did but because of busy lives they do not always get taught what to do to relieve stress or pass the time. In the beginning of it all I just wanted to find an easy way to show girls how to make friendship bracelets.

As I started to make the main website I realized that I wanted to branch out further and provide a way for girls that have very busy families to learn things that normally were passed down from mother to daughter.

I enjoyed it so much that I then branched out further and wanted to cover everything. If it could bring any kind of happiness to families or kids I wanted to cover it. Way too many kids sit bored at computers because they are stuck home alone while parents have to work. If I could just give them one hobby so they were not so all alone... If I could give just one family a fun idea that inspired them to spend more time together seeing the beauty of their life together...

Well. through it all I never saw the interest in the friendship bracelets like I thought I would. That is until now... The past week almost all of my top search engine keywords for the main site have to do with the friendship bracelet pages. It must be a summer thing.

So I decided that I would tell you all that I have some instructions on making friendship bracelets on the main website. Summer is a great time for kids to make them. As kids sit bored they are a great, cheap, and easy hobby to keep them busy.

If you would like to see all of the instructions please check out the Friendship Bracelet pages. I actually stopped adding more types because people seemed not interested. If people are actually interested I can add instructions for harder bracelets.

Back To Basics Toys

Geyser Blast Sprinkler

You probably have not heard of this store but I am sure you have heard of the company that owns it. Back To Basics Toys is owned by Scholastic. That's right, the company with the order forms that come home with your kids from school all year. The company that has all those great book fairs. You might not have known that they also have a great toy store.

Back To Basics Toys is just what it says. Those classic toys that you loved while growing up and some really great new ones. If you have some extra time check out their store and do some window shopping. At the least you will think of some great memories.

Alexa Toolbar - Increase Rank

I have seen a few blogs lately talking about Alexa rankings. Some have talked about how Alexa ranks them lower than other ranking services. Some have said that they think they might be falling in rank because of Entrecard. I do not think Alexa is complex enough to factor that in.

I do however know of how we can all bring up our ranking and help other Entrecard members as well. Alexa gets most of it's traffic information from people using their toolbar. Their toolbar counts one visit to your site per day per toolbar user. This is perfect for Entrecard seeing as people come once a day and usually everyday.

If we all use an Alexa toolbar while dropping we will get a two for one kind of deal. All you need to do is download and install the Alexa toolbar and make your drops like normal. If you tell your blog visitors about it then they will use it as they drop on you! Then all their drops on you are seen by Alexa.

I know there are tons of toolbars out there today but it is really simple to add and remove toolbars any time you want. For those that are not aware of this... All you need to do is look over to the right of your toolbar and click on Tools. From there click on toolbars and then check and uncheck whatever you want to use at that time.

All you need to do is download the toolbar and then head off to make your drops. Make sure you drop on me too. (wink wink) LOL

When you download the toolbar make sure to click Save. I made the mistake of clicking Open the first time and got no toolbar.

Yes it is available for Firefox too!!!

Alexa Toolbar Download

Need More Info?

If you do not want to just take my word for it... Here is what Alexa says on their website about how they get their rankings.

About the Alexa Traffic Rankings

A listing of all sites on the Web, sorted by traffic...
Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources. The information is sorted, sifted, anonymized, counted, and computed, until, finally, we get the traffic rankings shown in the Alexa service.

I am sure you will find something that you will really like. You can also find the listing of blogs that have won so far on the main site on the Family Blogs page.. You can still apply for the award at any time. You will find all the information that you need on the right side bar.

Shelly's About Me

THE MOM WITH BROWNIES! PENNY-PINCHING ~ FAMILY LIFE ~ FREE AND FRUGAL HOMESCHOOLING ~ YUMMY, YET MISERLY MENUS
* We are one of those kooky homeschooling families who believe in Jesus and have more than 2.5 children. This blog is for my children. When I've gone the way of the dodo bird they will have this to read. Hopefully it serves as our family scrapbook...because I'm not buying any more stinking wavy scissors and stickers! Just print this blog on photo paper and stick it in a photo album boys. Momma loves you!

Geocaching

We have a winner in the Fun Family Ideas category!

Ryan Simonsen and his family have been geocaching for years in Wisconsin. I knew Ryan and Sheila back when we were young but lost contact with them during the years that we lived in Arizona. I am very glad that Ryan sent this entry to me. He has a great little family that loves spending time together.

Our family has done some geocaching in Arizona and Wisconsin. We really like that it is outdoors and free. Anyone at any age can do it and kids love looking for treasure. James and the girls have even done some of the caches Ryan has set up and really enjoyed them.

Here is a portion of the winning entry...

Geocaching 101

by Ryan Simonsen

Ever have that thirst for adventure? Have you ever dreamed of finding hidden treasure? Have you ever wanted to go for a hike, but you didn't know where to go? Have I got a family activity for you......Geocaching.

Geocaching is a world wide treasure hunt played with a GPS reciever. This is a fun activity for the whole family and the best part is that it is free. There are over 500,000 caches in over 33 countries and it grows bigger everyday.

Geocaching on the main site

If you would like to see the full entry with all of the information about geocaching you can go to the main site and read all about Geocaching.

Matt Kenseth Autographs

Finally the craziness is over. James' mother and youngest brother came and stayed with us over the weekend. We grilled out twice and had a bon fire. We tried to be outside more but the bugs have been horrible. I can not even leave the dogs outside. We have gone through a ton of OFF.

We live about 20 minutes from the Matt Kenseth Museum so when people come to visit the girls want to bring them there. While they were there on Sunday they found out that Matt Kenseth was signing autographs in Janesville yesterday and got bracelets to get in. So they got some autographs. The girls were very excited. Noelle has a Daytona coat that she got autographed. Nicole got a Bristol hat autographed and Neona had him autograph a 1/24 car. Nicole would not talk to him so he teased her and played keep away with her hat.

Well, that means that I am another day behind on everything so I have a lot to catch up on now. I will be working like crazy but I will get caught up on everything. LOL

Win a Custom Blog Template

Does that look familiar? Maybe you have seen it in your inbox on Entrecard. Everyday I stop by there and drop my card. I love seeing the new designs. It does make me feel a bit guilty though. I spend so much time working on my main website and on new ideas for there and here that I have not done much with the way this blog looks.

Grumpy Cow is having a giveaway !!! One lucky blog win a new blog template! You should head on over and check it out. The templates I have seen on the site look great.

I will be signing up for the giveaway too. I have wanted a new blog design for awhile but I just keep putting it off. I can never decide if I should get something that would match the main site or go totally different. Right now I have a Frankenstein of a template. LOL

I just used the Minima template and added a second side bar. Then I made the left side bar wider to fit the wider ads. Then I made the post area wider to fit the larger games. Later I added the flowery parts. When I get caught up on the next 3 awards that are waiting for me to hand out, I want to add a navigation bar to the top. I have only been doing this whole blogging thing since May so I am not the best at it. LOL

Maybe if I win I can get a great template that is not bits and pieces of other templates. I hope you will all go and sign up for the giveaway. Good Luck!

Camping Crafts

This morning came way too early. We had a late night with our guests. So here is our next installment of camping things to get you ready for the Great American Backyard Campout on the 28th. If anyone is interested... the above picture is a T shirt design that is available at one of my stores.

Crafts & Activities

PINE CONE BIRD FEEDER

Supplies:
Pine cone
Paper plate
Butter knife
Smooth peanut butter
Birdseed
Ribbon or yarn
Scissors

Instructions:
Cut a long length of yarn or ribbon to use to hang the bird feeder.
Tie the ribbon in a knot around the pine cone near the top (about 3 sections down).
Tie a knot in the end of the ribbon.
Use the knife to get a large clump of peanut butter on the paper plate.
Use the knife to spread peanut butter inside the pine cone and around the edges.
Sprinkle the birdseed over the pine cone.
Roll the pine cone in the birdseed that collected on the plate.
Hang the bird feeder on the tree.
Enjoy watching the birds eat their treat!

Pet Rocks

Supplies:
Rocks or pebbles (cleaned)
Glue gun
Paint
Brushes
Eyes, pipe cleaners, ribbon, markers, yarn, etc.
Acrylic varnish or other shiny finish (optional)

Instructions:
Using a few rocks and pebbles, make an animal shape. Be creative!
Glue the rocks together and cool.
Paint the rocks. Let them dry.
Add eyes and other features using markers. Apply the acrylic varnish if you want a shiny finish.
Glue on eyes, pipe cleaners, ribbons, yarn, etc.

RUSTIC STICK FRAME

Supplies:
12 Sticks
Low Temp Glue Gun or white glue
Twine

Instructions:
Gather sticks from your backyard or a walk in the woods. Look for straight sticks from 1/4" to 1/2" thick.
Strip off any leaves or branches and break 6 of the sticks to 11" length. Break the other 6 to 9" length.
Arrange the sticks to form your picture frame using a glue gun to tack the sticks in place. Wrap the four corners with twine and glue the ends in place on the back.
Trim your photo to fit. Glue to back of frame at corners. Cut and glue a 6" piece of twine to the back of photo for hanging.

TERRARIUM

Supplies:
Plastic 2 liter soda bottle with cap
Very sharp scissors or craft knife
Dirt or potting soil
Seeds
Water
Permanent black marker

Instructions:
Remove the label from the bottle. Discard label. Save cap!
Wash and rinse out the bottle and cap.
Cut the bottle close to the bottom. I found a "line" about at the end of the label and cut there. You can cut it higher if you wish.
Lightly place dirt or potting soil in the base.
Plant a few seeds in the dirt.
Lightly water.
Put the cap on the bottle.
Cover the base with the top of the bottle. You will have to fiddle with it a bit to fit back inside the base.
Place in a sunny spot and watch for your seeds to grow.
When the plants are ready, repot them or plant them in your garden.
Enjoy!

Camping Games

Okay, I have time for a quick break. For all of those that are waiting for me to get back to them... Sorry, but that will not be happening until around Monday.

This weekend is going to be very busy for us. We have relatives coming and some of them will be staying with us. I will be lucky if I can manage to get my Entrecards all dropped. If you do not get one this weekend I am sorry. I will be back dropping like crazy after the weekend.

So I decided to post some things for next weekends Great American Backyard Campout.

Games

I TOOK A TRIP

Players: 4 or more

Everyone sits in a circle. One player, the leader, goes around saying to each player, "I took a trip. What did I take along?" The players name any object they please. One may say, "a suitcase," another says, "a pickle." Other answers might be "a lunch box," "an alarm clock," a peanut butter sandwich," "your poodle."

After each player has named an object, the leader goes around and asks a different question, any kind of question that will be funny, because the players are not supposed to laugh. The leader asks the same question of each player and they each must give the same answer they gave before.

For example, the leader asks something like, "What did I travel on?" The answers would come out, "a suitcase," "a pickle," "a lunch box," and so on. Since anyone who laughs is out of the game, the leader purposely tries to think of questions that will make their answers seem funny and silly.

After everyone has a chance to answer the first question, the leader asks another, such as "What did I wear around my neck?" and then another, trying to get everyone to laugh. The player who laughs last wins.

WINKING MURDER

All sit in a circle. Pass cards around telling people to keep them hidden; the person with the ace of spades is the murderer. When he is ready, the Murderer winks at people in the circle. Anyone who sees that they have been winked at lets out a blood-curdling scream and "dies." If someone thinks they know who the murderer is, they ask everyone to put their hands out into the center of the circle. Everyone closes their eyes and the person guessing touches the hand of the person they think is the murderer. If they are wrong, they are out of the game and the murderer is free to carry on... until they are found out or they murder everyone!

TWO TRUTHS AND A LIE

Take turns telling three statements about yourself. Make sure one of the statements is a lie. A little imagination goes a long way in this game! Everyone then tries to figure out which statements are true and which are not.

HOW LONG IS A MINUTE?

A quick time filler, this is ideal to calm a group down. Tell the campers that you are going to time a minute on your watch. The campers have to raise their hand when they have counted a minute in their heads. The closest one is the winner. This game can be extended to two minutes (or any other length of time) when the children get good at it.

*You can find these camping games and more by checking out the Great American Backyard Campout site.

Falling Bush Game

Well, It is Friday so it is game day. I just had to do this game. I discovered it over a year ago and maybe it is wrong for me to say this, but I think it is really funny. You can move him around with your mouse if he gets stuck or if you just want to give him a toss.

Great American Backyard Campout - June 28th

You all know how much time we spend as a family and how much time we spend outdoors. You might also remember the backyard campsite we had set up before all the storms we had recently. Well, while playing around online yesterday I discovered this. It screamed out to me actually. I knew that I just had to blog about it. I hope you will all join my family and all the other families around the country and have your own backyard campout. If you go to the site and sign up your campsite can be added to the map of people joining in. You can also see if others in your area are taking part. For the up coming days before the campout I will be posting some camping related posts with fun things to do while having your campout.

Great American Backyard Campout - June 28th

Now you can re-live that fun with your kids and grandkids. Join in NWF’s fourth annual Great American Backyard Campout™—Saturday, June 28!

Last year ten of thousands of neighbors, friends, and families united across the country for s’more-making, stargazing, and nature-watching. It’s easy! Take part right in your backyard or at your favorite camping spot.

Gardening With Kids

We have been very busy working on the yard still. This afternoon I will be doing a lot of weeding again. It has kept the kids active and busy. People are much busier these days. Things get put off and then forgotten. Families tend to forget about growing things with their kids.

Kids learn so much while gardening. They learn where their food comes from and many science lessons. It is also a great opportunity to spend time together talking. You can make gardening fun for kids with themes, activities, and lessons.

There are many ways to interest children in the garden. A successful children's garden allows whimsy and welcomes the discovery of a variety of "treasures." The quickest way to engage children in the garden is to give them a part in its design.

You can design a garden around a literature theme such a "Peter Rabbit" or "Planting a Rainbow" garden. Or you can design a garden to be a particular type of habitat, such as a butterfly garden or a bird garden. Another concept for the garden is to focus on a food product, as in a Pizza Garden, a Stone Soup Garden, or a Stir-Fry Garden.

The design of the garden involves: deciding on a design concept, deciding on what you will plant and how the plantings will be arranged, and then planting the garden. You can also decorate the garden with child-made objects and signs.

Another way to sustain interest in the garden is to plan for your family's harvest and feast days, and to have daily garden "reporters" who investigate the plants' progress. My kids LOVE going out everyday and checking how the plants are doing. Yesterday they were very excited to find the first pea pod.

If you do not have room for a garden you can still grow plants with your kids. All you need is some cheap seeds. You can grow things in containers too. Your kids can even paint the pots to make them more their own. Kids also like searching for "new" containers. They can use old things from around the house or garage and turn them into planting containers.

If you grow beans, peas, or another plant that creates a climbing vine your kids can provide strings for the plants to grow up and have a race. Then they can go outside everyday and check on the progress.

Gardening is a great way to spend time together and have fun. It also gets them outside in the fresh air. Kids spend way too much time indoors these days. These are the memories your kids will take with them when they grow up. Just remember to start out with bug spray or your gardening will not last too long.

A Summer Day

Well, the girls had a blast at their first day of summer school! Noelle is taking Jazz Band, French, and Quilting. Nicole is taking Lawn Games, Codes Clues and Treasures, and Soccer. Neona is taking Brain Games, No Bake Cooking, and Puppets. We spent a lot of time after they got home talking all about it. Neona was especially happy because they got to have smoothies that they made in class.

Later in the day we got started on the yard work that really needs to get done. After all the storms here we have quite the mess. I tried to help out the peas that got pummeled by the rain and do some weeding in the garden. The girls gathered branches that had fallen. Before long James came home and he and the girls started to paint the front porch.

Time flew by so fast that I did not even realise how late it was. I finally started dinner at 7:30. Oops! I had some leftover turkey so I just quick made a creamy pasta to throw it all in. We had just enough time after dinner to watch a bit of television together before bed.

Hopefully today will not go by as fast. With all of the yard work needing to get done I did not feel like taking a new picture of the yard so I just used this one from when the girls camped out back. The tent is down right now because of all the rain we have had.

Have Fun and Make Ooze

Summer is really becoming a reality. We have had 5 days of no school so far here. We had some make up snow days so it is already time to start summer school today. The girls are very excited. They picked some really fun classes. Noelle is the most excited because she is taking Jazz Band. She loves playing instruments. She already plays cello and clarinet. She got a guitar last Christmas and has wanted to get better at playing it. The band teacher told her that she can bring her guitar and clarinet for jazz band and he will help her learn more. So it will give her the opportunity to learn more guitar. She has been really looking forward to it.

On the other side of summer...

We still have to find fun things to do at home to keep the girls busy and entertained. So I think today will be Ooze. The girls love playing with Ooze. I love that even if they get it on everything it will not be a gooey mess because it turns right back into a powder as it dries. I hope you will try this recipe out and have fun with it.

Ooze

You will need

1 cup of dry cornstarch

large bowl or pan

food coloring (if you want)

1/2 cup of water

1. Make sure you work on an easy to clean surface and easy to clean floor. This stuff can drip and get messy but you just have to wipe it with a damp cloth because it dries really fast and turns right back to powder.

2. Put the cornstarch into the bowl. Add a drop or two of food coloring. (Use whatever colors you like.) Add water slowly, mixing the cornstarch and water with your fingers until all the powder is wet.

3. Keep adding water until the Ooze feels like a liquid when you're mixing it slowly. Then try tapping on the surface with your finger or a spoon.

When Ooze is just right, it won't splash. It will feel solid. If your Ooze is too powdery, add a little more water. If it's too wet, add more cornstarch. It will be hard to work with if you move too fast. You have to mix it slowly and trust that it really will work out.

It will start to dry out and turn back to powder after awhile so if you want to save it you should add some more water and put it in a ziplock.

Things to try

Pick up a handful and squeeze it. Stop squeezing and it will drip through your fingers.

Rest your fingers on the surface of the Ooze. Let them sink down to the bottom of the bowl. Then try to pull them out fast.

Take a blob and roll it between your hands to make a ball. Then stop rolling. The Ooze will trickle away between your fingers.

Put a small plastic toy on the surface. Does it stay there or does it sink?

It is Friday yet again. I promised a game to celebrate summer every Friday so here is this Friday's game. If you do not want to wait until next Friday for a new game you can check out more of the games in our Arcade anytime.

Create a Photo Gallery

For those of you that are new to our websites, there is also a Your Fun Family Magazine. Some of our articles are written by Family Features. Family Features has offered me some video articles but I have not taken them up on it before. Today I decided that I would use one of them for my blog post and see how it goes. I may end up adding some video articles to the magazine. The news videos in The Newsroom portion of our sites is doing well so maybe this will be a good addition too.

Make Empty Walls Works of Art

Add personality and warmth to a room, hallway or staircase with an arrangement of your favorite framed photographs, wall art or collectibles. Adding proper lighting to the arrangement will give it the attention it deserves. Track lighting is a simple and affordable way to make a dark hallway safe and cheery, to light up a gallery of family photos, or to bring to life artwork or special elements of the room’s decor.

Rubber Egg Experiment

Today is our first day of summer break! I am loving it so far. We are busy doing a whole bunch of nothing today. I wanted a nice long day of laziness. Maybe tomorrow we will do something productive. We have relatives coming to visit over the weekend so we should do a good scrub around the house. A fun family is not necessarily an always spotless family. :)

My kids keep wanting to do the Rubber Egg experiment so we have yet another one going on the kitchen counter. It is actually ready to pull out we just keep forgetting about it until James is home from work. He is not too fond of the vinegar smell so we keep putting it off. We should probably get around to it soon. I can only imagine that the smell must get worse with time.

The rubber egg experiment is a rather simple one. You just place a raw egg in a clear jar and fill it with vinegar. After around 24 hours you replace the vinegar in the jar with fresh vinegar. It will be done after about 7 days. Your kids will have fun watching the bubbles form around the egg as the vinegar breaks down the shell.

For the full instructions and the science lesson you can go to the Rubber Egg Experiment on the main site.

Get an Internet Filter for Peace of Mind

Today's post is an article from the Your Fun Family Magazine in the Computers and Internet section.

(ARA) – The Internet is changing the way kids learn about the world around them; but unfortunately, not always for the better. Sure the information superhighway offers easy access to information when they have questions or need to complete school reports, but unfortunately that’s not all our kids are finding.

According to a recent University of New Hampshire study, 42 percent of Internet users between the ages of 10 and 17 have been exposed to online pornography (defined in the study as images of naked people or people having sex). Of those, 66 percent said they did not want to view the images and had not sought them out. Many stumbled onto the X-rated images through other “normal” Internet use, including talking online with friends, visiting chat rooms and playing games.

“In this day and age, I know you can’t protect your kids from everything, but there’s no reason for them to be exposed to such fodder,” says Paul Payton of Chesterton, Ind. About 10 years ago when his oldest child was just five years old, the former Honeywell technical support employee started working on a filter that would keep out material he didn’t want finding its way into his home.

Today, that filter has evolved into a service thousands of people around the world use to protect their families from inappropriate material. CleanInternet.com now uses four methods of filtering:

1) Database of Inappropriate Sites (Sites that should always be blocked or allowed, updated daily)

2) Web Address Keyword List (certain obvious words will cause a site or search to be blocked)

3) Content Analyzation (some sites, like personal web pages, are tested for bad content when accessed)

4) New Website Categorization (as new sites are accessed they are analyzed and listed)

“Many teens know more about the computer than their parents. Our service protects the whole family. There are no override passwords or ways to get around the filter. It is possible to easily install it and forget it,” explains Payton, who adds that the service is customizable. "The users cannot unblock sites themselves, for obvious reasons, and can make unblock requests to tech-support, which are normally responded to within the hour.”

To sign up for the service, which costs just $4.95 per month, log on to www.cleaninternet.com and fill out a quick form which asks for your contact and payment information. Then download the software using your assigned serial key.

Whether you connect to the internet through Dialup, DSL, Cable, Satellite or Wi-Fi Hotspot, it doesn’t matter. Once you install the software on a particular computer, users will not be able to uninstall or bypass the filter.

“We know what’s out there and we want to protect our kids as best we can. This is an easy and reliable way to do it,” says Payton.

50 States Game

Okay, it is Friday. Not only is it Friday but it is my kid's big end of the year dance, sports, and games day at school. This is their last Friday of school. They still have to go back Monday and Tuesday next week to make up snow days but this really is the count down for sure.

I decided that since it is summer I will do a new game each Friday. It will be a summer thing. We may not be able to have the big party of a summer like the kids do but why not enjoy it anyway? So each Friday over the summer I will share one of the online games that I have in the arcade on the main site.

I decided to start with the 50 States game. It reminds me of the late night talk shows that go into the streets and quiz people. It is always shocking to realise how much we should all know but we do not. I still swear that our children steal our brain cells when they are born. That is why I can never remember where I left my coffee cup. LOL

Don't forget, we still have more winners coming and you can still enter the contests. This is just a fun relaxing break.

Family Fun with Microwaves

I am sorry once again

Today is going to be a busy one. Normally I have free time to work on my sites while the kids are at school. Today however is Noelle's graduation from 6th grade. Who knew it would be a bigger thing than her graduation from 5th grade! LOL

For those that have just started to get to know our family... We have had to move a lot because of James' work. We just moved to a small town in January. This town has 6th grade in elementary school so Noelle is yet again having a graduation. This time the girls are older so it is a big deal. I have been informed that I must straighten her hair, apply some make-up, and help with the dress. The graduation is during the normal school day so James is coming home from work early and I am unable to be entertaining in blog world. LOL

I decided that since there are a lot of new readers from Entrecard, I will repost one of my favorite posts from the pre-Entrecard era. For those that have already seen this I am sorry. For all you Entrecard readers, I hope you enjoy it. Now I am off to shower and get all beautified.

Repost

As I sat here today thinking about what to write about James called and asked me to fax him a grocery list. The girls and I started to check what we needed and soap was on the list. This is when Neona asked if we could microwave some Ivory soap this week and make some oatmeal soap. So I started to think about all the things people microwave for fun.

There are many people that microwave things that are dangerous but I have no interest in buying a new microwave right now. There are a lot of everyday things that you can microwave that will not break your microwave. You can even teach your kids a science lesson while having fun. They may get a little messy though.

***I should now let you in on a little secret just in case you do not know already. Restaurants use this method all the time and no one has messier microwaves than them. To clean a microwave with the least amount of work you just need to microwave a wet washcloth for 1 minute. Keep the door closed while the cloth cools off. The steam softens whatever might be hard to scrub. After the cloth has cooled off enough you should be able to just wipe the microwave clean. For really hard jobs you may need to do this twice. This method also eliminates the need for strong chemicals that can get into your food when you cook it.

Things to remember...

  1. You should always microwave things on a paper towel or microwave safe plate so clean up is easier.
  2. As much as you want to feel things afterwards remember that they will be very hot.
  3. Soaking plates in water afterward will make it easier to clean them but you HAVE to wait until they are cooled down all the way.
  4. Marshmallows can still be eaten but you HAVE to wait or you will really burn yourself.
  5. Do not EVER leave things in the microwave unattended unless you know the results. These things are not meant to be microwaved for very long.

Microwave Ivory Soap

I covered this on the main website already. Summary - Microwave Ivory soap on top of a paper towel for 2 minutes. Ivory soap is whipped full of air. Air has water vapors in it so when it is microwaved it expands into a big soap cloud. Remember that after you try this one you can use the soap to make the oatmeal soap craft. The Ivory soap ends up having a very weird waxy paper like feel. (remember to wait until it cools down)

Marshmallows

This is one the kids like to do when we have just a few leftover after a bon fire. Place a marshmallow or peeps on a microwave safe plate for about 1 minute. It will swell up much larger than the original size. If you cook them too long they will burn and have black spots. Burnt marshmallows turn into rocks that are not edible. They are also very hard to get off of plates and silverware.

Gummy candies

You can microwave any kind of soft candy like gummies or jelly beans. Be very careful though because they turn into a pile of hot bubbling sugar lava. Again, let cool off fully and then soak the plate in water to dissolve the sugar.

Have fun trying different things at home. Remember the basic microwave safety rules though. I have included some videos from YouTube if you would rather just watch some things getting done and not make a mess. LOL

I have not tried the grape plasma one yet. I do not know how much I feel safe with that one. The egg one can be bad too if the microwave is too small or the egg is put into a bowl. Remember that any explosion creates a force so anything that is too close to the force can break.

*If you are viewing this post offsite as a feed you will need to click over to the actual blog to view the video player.

That all being said....

Happy Microwaving and remember to...

The New Awards Pages

The new awards pages have been updated. If you would like to check them out here they are.

PreSchool Mama

Well, I can not begin announcing any winners until I introduce you to someone first. Before I even started this contest she was a winner. Actually before I even started a blog she had already won my award.

I am a lazy website builder. Gone are the days that I do anything from scratch. The main website has over 200 pages so I just find one that fits my needs for the new page and make a copy of it to work with. As I copied the Family Links page I realized something. I had already had an award winner with a blog that has not ever been discussed on this blog.

So before we begin the announcements I would like to tell you about her.

She has some fun ideas to try. Almost all of the ideas use things you already have at home. She finds new and exciting ways to teach and entertain your preschooler.

PreSchool Mama's "About Me"

The PreSchool Mama is a one-stop resource for all the help and support you need to raise your preschooler.

In here, you’ll find advice from me, a former Montessori preschool teacher and mother of a 7 year old, that will help you give your child an edge, enhance his learning and reading skills, and boost self esteem; easy tips and how tos for fun activities and crafts projects; and links to great resources that will help you take your child through this, the most important stage in his development.

The PreSchool Mama will give you advice on dealing with common preschooler health and nutrition issues. You’ll find simple and easy ideas (I love simple and easy. As a preschool mama, many of you will have other younger or older kids, or a full time job, and time could be a luxury.) for arts and crafts that combine creativity with a great bonding experience for you and your child, 5 minute activities that will help you teach him through play which is how kids of this age do all of their learning, and how-to articles to help your child develop his reading, alphabet and numeral skills.

You’ll find resources to help with potty training and bed wetting issues, ways to enhance socials skills and encourage independent thinking.

You’ll find all the stuff that’s worked for me, the well meaning tips that didn’t, and the tricks I wish I’d known when I was raising my son.

You’ll also find advice, inspiration and motivation for you, the PreSchool Mama, without who this blog wouldn’t exist.

We are starting to announce some winners!!!

Yep, you heard me right. I have been busy changing things around on the main website. I had to change around the home page to include links to the contests and awards. Then I had to create new pages to display the winners. Now I am done and ready to begin!!!

I have really enjoyed checking out all the blogs that people have submitted. Perhaps too much, That is one of the things that has slowed me down. I really am getting into blogs these days. It felt good to work on the main site again though. I have neglected it lately while on my new blog kick.

Thank you for all your submissions. I have really enjoyed them! Remember you can still enter if you have not already. There is always room to help promote other families!

Keeps your eyes open because this is just the first of three posts I will be making today. Remember to check back for the rest. No, you can not cheat and check out the main website! You will have to wait and see how it looks until after the third post. I will not be updating the website until then!

Want More Traffic For Your Site?

Everyone wants more traffic right?

Is there such a thing as too much traffic? That would be like too much money or too much chocolate. You can always find room for more. Today as I started my rounds I came across a post about traffic and getting more of it on Just 4 Families. You know I am a sucker for anything family so I have to give her a little plug there. Well, her post made me start thinking about how much is not said in blogs. I wanted to bring it all up. We are all in this together we might as well help each other out.

First I would like to talk about Entrecard since so many people are using it right now. It can be a powerful door opener in the beginning. It provides people with a way to advertise on other peoples blogs for free. Most people will drop on whoever has dropped on them. So the more you drop the more traffic you receive from drops. I would like to point out that not all drops are created equal. I will drop on anyone that drops on me but if I am dropping more cards than that I only drop on people that would be interested in my site. Many people that power drop are dropping on "guaranteed drops back". If you are dropping on people that are hunters and you are a vegetarian blog you may have just gained a drop back but that is it. You want to get people to come to your blog and like it. Maybe they will keep coming back and spread the word about it.

Next let's talk about blog catalogs/directories. I do believe that this can help get you some exposure for your blog. I have not seen much traffic coming in from some of them yet but I just joined them so it probably takes time for the traffic to come in from them. It is free so why not do it. I do not bother with some of the smaller ones. They seem to be mostly just blog owners that post their blog but do not visit other people's blogs. Not many regular readers go to them and what you want is more traffic for your site so they do not help much.

Communities and forums are a great way to gain traffic for your website. You can not just show up and push your blog though. Be a real community member and make friends. You get a profile page of your own that you can use to promote your site and any product you sell. Plus most of these sites allow you to make a signature that goes along with your posts so you can create a link for your blog. Best of all it is yet again free. CafeMom has many groups of women with all kinds of interests just waiting to meet new people. They do have a strict no spam rule though so you can not just try to get visitors you have to talk with people that will then see your signature and maybe check your profile. I recently started a community to go with my site but it is pretty lonely in there so far. You are all more than welcome to join and promote your sites, blogs, or products if you would like.

Yahoo Answers has not only been a good tool to get more traffic but very fun also. They have an endless supply of people looking for answers to every topic imaginable. Just start answering some questions in a topic that you know. They have a place under your answer to add in a URL as the source so people then see your link again for free! Be warned though it is addicting because you gain points and compete for best answer. I am at 51% best answers. LOL

Link Swaps are a very big deal. I do not want to piss off anyone here but I will just say that I have never paid for advertising. That is actually kind of my thing. I want to see how much I can do without ever paying for anything other than my one bill to host the main site. That is not even that much because now Yahoo! has that awesome unlimited data storage and bandwidth.

There are many sites out there that have link pages that you can be added to and the most it costs is a link back. I have had many people contact me from my main website asking if I would do a link swap with them. Free traffic for your site!

Links help you in two ways. One people see the link and click through to your site and two search engines use them kind of like points. The more "points" your site has the better your site looks. Search engines want to give the best search results so they show sites that have the best links. If a site is good people will create links to it.

When making link swaps remember a few rules. Not all links are created equal. Search engines give links a kind of points system. The better ranking the site that is linking to you is the more that link is worth. Also if the website that is linking to you is of the same kind of subjects as what you have it is worth more. It shows that your site is really about that topic. So a link on a site that is ranked high and in the same topic area as your own can be worth 100 links on other websites.

There are a lot of link farms out there. DO NOT EVER DO A LINK FARM!!!! This is very important. Search engines are too smart for that and they become smarter everyday. Being part of a link farm is like getting the plague. Google will not come anywhere near you. You really want search engines directing traffic in. They are a huge source of free traffic.

Content, content, and content... very important! No matter what you do to get more traffic if they do not find your site interesting than it was all a waste of time. You need good content to keep people on your site and talking about it. How many times have you found something you liked and blogged about it or told a friend? You want to be creating that buzz that people are talking about.

Content is also very important to search engines. If they do not see good content they will not add you to search results. Look at my silly post last week about making Edible Playdough . It was just a little post with a recipe but I talked about my other playdough recipes on the main site so Google saw that "edible playdough" had a high word percentage so it was seen as a good result for that key phrase. Now that silly post is on the first page of results if you Google those words. (We will have to get into that more at a later date.)

Okay so now you have a good start to getting more traffic to your website or blog. Remember all of these are free ways to get more traffic for your website so don't just try one. Try them ALL!

I have always believed in trying everything and if it is free then you have nothing to lose. Who would not want to get more traffic for their website or blog? Especially free traffic!

Thank You

I have really enjoyed writing the post this morning so thank you Just 4 Families for the idea. I think I will be writing more posts about this topic in the near future. So make sure to check back. If anyone has anything to share, a questions, or wants me to discuss something in my later posts about this feel free to make a comment. Remember that we are all in this together so lets start commenting on each others blogs and talking about it. Again you are all welcome to join my new community where you can talk, learn more about each other, and promote yourself.

I Apologize

I would also like to apologize to those that have entered the contest already. I am going through and checking out each and everyone of your sites and blogs. I am really enjoying them. I had wanted to be ready to announce the first winner today but I got side tracked with this post and it became longer than I first planned. I am going through the entries though.

To everyone else, You can still enter the contest. I am always looking for more entries so keep them coming.
