Picking a location for the garden

Today feels weird. It feels like it is Monday and I should have the kids in school. Friday James took off for the garage sale so it feels like the weekend should be over now. James went to Racine this morning to go golfing with his friend Jeremy. Him being gone makes it feel even more like a Monday. He should be back early this afternoon though.

When he gets home I want to get out into the yard and make some decisions on where we want to plant things. We are still unsure on where we want to plant the garden or where we want to put in some areas with flowers. There are only a few flat areas in the yard that are not shaded by trees. One area is to the side of the kids playhouse but it may still get too much shade once the trees fill all the way in. Another area of the yard we are considering is on the other side of the yard and halfway back but it would have to be in front of an existing planting area that has boulders and bushes. A garden would block that from being seen. Our other thought was right up against the patio. I had been planning on putting flowers there but we do not have too many options for where to put the vegetable garden.

I really do not like the idea of having it there but it looks like the best location for dirt and sun and it would keep most wild animals away since it is so close to the house. I would like to make those decisions today when James gets home and cut in some borders to mark off where we will be planting. There is plenty of room at the bottom of the slope and the ground is always wet there but I think it will be too shaded down there once the trees fill in. I was thinking we could maybe plant watermelon and pumpkins down there. I love the fact that the whole yard is surrounded by trees so it is very private but it makes it a challenge when we actually need sun for a garden.

James checked out the little hardware store here in town on Friday. He found that they rent tillers for $21 an hour, so we will be doing that. He was thinking of creating raised beds but then he would have to buy all the dirt and drive back and forth to Madison. As of right now our plan is to till up the planting areas next Sunday. I really want to get started on something right now.
